Tamagawa 'Ice Breaker' Nama Genshu Junmai Ginjo 500ml
Tamagawa 'Ice Breaker' Nama Genshu Junmai Ginjo 500ml
Size: 500ml | ABV: 18%
In 3 words: Best Over Ice
Break the rules of traditional sake serving with Ice Breaker, the legendary summer release from Kyoto’s progressive Tamagawa Brewery. Masterminded by Philip Harper—the first non-Japanese toji (master brewer) in history—this unpasteurized (nama) and undiluted (genshu) masterpiece is intentionally crafted to be served over ice.
The nose on this seasonally released sake is a cool, complex collection of melon, pineapple, Muscat, and honey, underscored by nougat, toffee, and white chocolate aromas. Talk about a total flavour bomb. On the palate, this year's batch is exceptionally soft, smooth, rich, and velvety. Look for deep umami goodness, featuring layers of pear, milk chocolate, honeycomb, and toasted cashews before sliding into a surprisingly quick, clean finish.
Master Brewer Philip Harper notes that summer heat calls for a change in pace, recommending you drop a large ice cube directly into your glass. As the ice melts, the sake dynamically transforms, shifting from a powerful, concentrated powerhouse into a wonderfully mellow, refreshing, and beautifully rounded summer cooler.
Sommelier Note: This is the ultimate, bulletproof crowd-pleaser for casual dining. While it behaves like a soft red or a fat, unctuous white wine, its robust structural profile means it goes with absolutely anything. It is a spectacular match for informal summer fare—especially street food favourites like tacos, Summer classics such as burgers, grilled chicken and creamy potato salad.
